Bandits Inline Hockey

While the Pittsburgh Bandits are not technically an expansion team in the PIHA, you could argue they are. The Bandits merged with the Phatoms of the 2006 PIHA season, trying to create a powerhouse team out of Pittsburgh for years to come. Only thing is, almost 90% of the team has never played PIHA Pro before. The Phantoms of '06 have three players remaining on the Pro roster, CJ Gamble, Nate Scharff, and Mike Francis. The rest of the Phantoms chose different paths, while the Bandits filled their gaps with a core young group of kids. The three remaining players from last year have really stepped up their leadership, being in the league last season, they have had a lot of advice for the younger guys. At the start of the season the Bandits were not givin much of a chance, even in peoples preseason predictions. That has somewhat changed now, as the Bandits are arguably one of the top teams in the league. Their speed and conditioning is above par, which is understandable given that 12 players on the team are under the age of 21. Yes, i said 12. The goaltending has also been a big key to the success of the team, Kevin Hammerschlag (TEAM USA JR World), Mitch Hardin (TEAM USA JR World), and Brett Leggat (Tour Mudcats/Team Canada Mens). The scoring and defense have also both been outstanding.

BANDITS REMAIN UNDEFEATED
The Bandits took on the York Typhoon last Friday in a two game matchup. The game was over from the start as the Bandits had 3 goals in the first 5 minutes. The final scores of both games were 7-1, and 8-2.

The f0llowing day the Bandits would take on the Harrisburg Lunatics twice. The first game was extremely close, 0-0 going into the second period. The bandits pulled away with two quick goals from Brock Wilson and Jim Redstreake, and finished off with a Greg Kelly empy netter. Although none of them received the #1 star of the game, as Brett Leggat got his 1st shutout of the season. Redstreake and Wilson got the #2, and 3 stars respectively.

The second game would not be quite as close. The Bandits scoring 20 seconds into the game from Brock Wilson. The Lunatics would tie it up rather quickly, but that wouldnt last very long. The Bandits would pull away with goals coming from Nate Scharff (2), Jason Roux, Dustin Roux, Kelly, Wilson, and Redstreake. Dustin Roux would get the #1 star of the game with 1G 4A, Brock Wilson got the #2 star with 2G and 2A, and Leggat got the #3 star with only 1 goal against.

** Leggat currently has the top GAA in the league at 1.75. He is 4-0 on the year. While Kevin Hammerschlag is 8-0 in net.

Bandits Win Home Opener

The Pittsburgh Bandits took on the Marple Gladiators and the Feasterville Fury this past weekend for their Home Opener. The Bandits came out flying and beat Marple in all four games Saturday. On Sunday they took on the new franchise from Feasterville, the players were very excited for these games as the Fury had split games with the highly touted Harrisburg Lunatics. The first game was a close score of 4-2 but the Bandits outshot the Fury 35-12, with an amazing performance from their goaltender. The second game was not as close as the Bandits easily won by a score of 8-3. The Fury are a good team and expect them to get better throughout the season.

The next set of games will be against the Harrisburg Lunatics in two weeks. These should be two very good games and could give everyone and early idea of who is on top of the highly competitive Mason Dixon Division.

Notes: Congrats to Bandits players Brett Leggatt and TJ Plaugher who won gold medals at Narch in the Pro, and Mens Platinum divisions.

Bandits unveil new youth team uniforms . The Bandits will sport a new look this coming season thanks to their sponsor Tour Hockey. Being a member of the Tour Hockey family is a special honor and the Bandits are thankful for being a part of it. The Bandits will also being sporting the new 10W40 pants as well as some other Tour gear.

Pro & Minor Team Open Tryouts Complete:

Open tryouts for both the Pro & Minor teams is complete, main camp to follow in early October. The talent was good enough to assign all players to the main camps before cutting anyone. The camps should be very competitive with several players in both the pro and minor team battling for final roster spots. The pro & minor teams will be entering in second season in PIHA league and look to improved on what was a very successful first season for both teams. The Bandits will look to strengthen their defense which will be lead by veteran Nate Scharff. The offense will feature speed and versatily and with a combination of both veteran & rookies. The Bandits will have their main camp the first weekend of October and will finialize roster spots for both teams.

Word coming out of Detroit from Torhs Nationals is that Steven Baker Goalie had a great tournament as a U16 playing up in the U18 Elite Division. Way to go Steven!!

USARS Nationals coming to Pittsburgh June 28th - July 2nd. I believe that this is the first time that our city will host a national inline hockey event.
